Maks vzw is an NGO recognised as non-formal adult education and youth centre, empowering people to create their own success stories since 1999. Maks vzw is located in one of the most deprived neighbourhoods of Brussels, named Kuregem. Most inhabitants here come from an immigrant or refugee background. Within a population of about 25,000 spread over just 2 km2,there are over 170 different nationalities. The rates of unemployment (around 30%) and illiteracy (50% only primary school degrees) are high. Lately, youth unemployment increased to an alarming 52%. The average income per person is under 700€ a month, which is less than half the average of the Brussels Region.

Maks vzw offers two open ICT learning centres where people can take free courses or workshops tailored to their needs. Keeping barriers as low as possible, we encourage people to expand their digital skills to actively participate in 21st-century society. Our aim in this is to facilitate social mobility by fighting digital illiteracy on all levels. People from disadvantaged groups are attracted to digital media and are at the same time aware that they are at risk of being socially and/or digitally excluded. Maks vzw specialises in using digital media to give disadvantaged and vulnerable groups a voice, inviting them at the same time in a lifelong learning process and an integration process.

We work with different methodologies.

Digital storytelling

Digital Storytelling (DST) is a methodology that can be used as a pathway to discuss all kinds of societal topics with adult learners (even low skilled) and youngsters (+14), empowering them and enhancing their digital skills. A digital story is a personal narrative with still images and a voice-over. The storyteller gives their opinion or point of view, making the audience think about this topic and working for social change. Digital stories are short videos about 3-5 minutes long.

Digital Design For Change

A mix of traditional design thinking combined with the acquisition of basic digital skills for disadvantaged adults or low-skilled youngsters. In a 60h workshop, the learners try to analyze and tackle a societal problem using for steps: analyze the problem (emphasize), imagine a solution, organize action and share your digital story as a call to action to your target audience.

Steam activities

Since 2015 Maks runs a coding school situated. The methodology is based on the learning of computational thinking (plugged and unplugged) and the pedagogy of the Lifelong Kindergarten developed by MIT: cultivating creativity with projects, passion, peers and play. develop the creative capacities needed to thrive in today’s rapidly changing society.



CESIE is a European centre of studies and initiatives established in 2001 and its mission is to promote educational innovation, participation and growth. CESIE acts in different educational field aiming at involving people, civil society, private and public sectors, researching and testing new educational methodologies to better answer to social needs.

CESIE also acts to promote intercultural dialogue among people from over the world and enhances capacities and values of each person. CESIE works with several target groups, among which disadvantaged, marginalized ones, with the overall aim to develop effective and inclusive approaches for the target groups. The main activities that CESIE implement, especially in the field of migrants, refugees and asylum seekers, are:

  • Developing a learning and training offer to unaccompanied minors, young and adult migrants on ICT, Employability, Rights & Responsibilities, Entrepreneurship
  • Strengthen and Enhancing the competences of teachers, school staff and educators so that they are able to better approach diversity through Critical Incidents methodologies; Intercultural awareness and sensitiveness trainings”
  • Promoting an inclusive society by encouraging the active participation of local and migrant communities through awareness-raising campaigns



CARDET is the leading research and development centre in the Mediterranean region with global expertise in education, youth support and empowerment, digital skills, and capacity building. As the largest independent non-profit centre based in Cyprus, CARDET is independently affiliated with universities and institutions from around the world, such as Yale University, the University of Nicosia and the International Council of Educational Media.

Our team, in partnership with EAEA, has recently developed the lifelong learning strategy 2021-2027 for Cyprus, engaging several ministries, government agencies, social partners, and public/private stakeholders. 

CARDET has completed more than 500 initiatives relating to education, youth empowerment, inclusion, digital transformation and digital skills, green transition, health and wellbeing, sustainable development, innovation, and entrepreneurship. CARDET brings together an international team of experts with decades of global expertise in education research and development.

Members of our team, board of directors, and advisory board have served in high profile positions for organisations like UNESCO, Commonwealth of Learning, OECD, Google, and the American Educational Research Association.



Jovesólides is an NGO based by youth in a vulnerable community in the surrounding of Valencia city. The work/projects of this organization is mainly focused on youth as a target group, but it is also attending all diverse kinds of vulnerable communities and society in general when it comes the chance to promote a new vision of social integration and social inclusion. This organization has experience in diverse areas of work as:

  • E-inclusion, including labor inclusion of vulnerable communities
  • Social awareness / Education for development and volunteering, also focused in content as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)
  • International Cooperation for Development, mainly focused on the Youth capacity building in the latin american context
  • Social Entrepreneurship and Social Innovation, as one of the main areas developed by the organization, also mainstreamed in the previous areas.
